followed by a special panel discussion

Chinese Societies

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME
from the time of exclusion until now

The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923 is a tragic yet largely forgotten chapter of Canadian history, profoundly impacting the lives of Chinese across Canada for nearly a quarter century. The only law in Canadian history to deny entry to Canada on the basis of race, this Act separated families and resulted in lasting generational trauma in the Chinese Canadian community, including those in Edmonton.

Join us for a free screening and the Alberta premiere of The Paper Trail: The Highlights Tour. The film documents the Chinese Canadian Museum’s feature exhibition in Vancouver, BC. Following the film, we will host a special panel discussion on the role of Chinese Societies during the time of exclusion with Sue Mah, Sarah Ling, and Larry Chin. As part of the fabric of Chinese communities since early settlement, Chinese Societies have played an integral role both during and after the Exclusion Act era.

Learn about the evolving purpose of Chinese Societies and more!

Sue joined the Society when her father stepped away from the Board and eventually became the third generation in her family to hold the Board's Secretary position. Sue attended both Mah Society Heritage Tours to Baksa, Toisan, China. During those trips to her ancestral village in 2018 and 2019, Sue developed an interest in her Chinese roots. Then, learning about the hardships early Chinese Canadian settlers to experienced, Sue developed a strong desire to tell the story that has become Journey of the Horse.
